The 4 C’s of Diamonds
You have probably heard about the 4 C’s of diamonds but which one is most important? Well, it really comes down to you. The 4 C’s of course are Cut, Clarity, Carat and Color. They all play a significant role in the diamond selection process. And are crucial to ensuring you are getting the best diamond online.
Diamond Cut
Unless you are buying diamonds as investments the Cut is generally what most diamond buyers start with. The diamond cut refers to the quality of a diamond’s angles, the depth, facets, brilliance and finishing touches. In essence, these factors directly impact a diamond’s ability to sparkle and the overall look. There are shallow, deep and ideal cut diamonds. Depending on the diamond shape you choose these can vary widely.
Diamond Color
Diamond Color is graded on how white or colorless a diamond is. There is a grading scale the GIA assigns diamonds from D to Z. D is considered the highest quality in terms of color as it is the most colorless. The further you get to Z the more noticeable brown or yellow tints you will find.
Diamond Clarity
A Diamond’s Clarity grade evaluates how clean a diamond is from both inclusions and blemishes. The GIA grades clarity of diamonds on the following scale:
- FL (Flawless)
- IF (Internally Flawless)
- VVS1 (Very, Very Slightly Included 1)
- VVS2 (Very, Very Slightly Included 2)
- VS1 (Very Slightly Included 1)
- VS2 (Very Slightly Included 2)
- SI1 (Slightly Included 1)
- SI2 (Slightly Included 2)
- I1 (Inclusions 1)
- I2 (Inclusions 2)
Internally Flawless / Flawless – No internal or external imperfections. Flawless diamonds are extremely rare. And are the most expensive when it comes to diamond selection.
Imperfections can interfere with light as it passes through the diamond making them less “sparkly” and therefore less valuable.
When it comes to clarity, our recommendation is to ensure the diamond is clean to the eye, and that any inclusions are not interfering with light reflection.
Carat Weight
The last of the 4 diamond C’s has to do with the weight and overall size of the diamond. The larger the carat, the larger the diamond. Of course, most people think the bigger the better when it comes to carat weight but honestly, that is not true. A smaller diamond that is flawless with a D color and ideal cut will be much more valuable overall than a larger diamond without these qualities.
